Michaela Campbell seizes Women 100m breaststroke gold: Day one – 2012 NSW Metropolitan Championships
Michaela Campbell of SSSD seized the title of Long Course 100m breaststroke discipline in Women 15 Year Olds age category on initial day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) Metropolitan Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday, March
3.
The NSW Championship is a two-day competition, where the national age group swimmers are provided a chance to compete with each other in their exclusive events.
The 15-year-old Campbell gave no chance to her swimmers to fight back and dictated terms to her opponents throughout the double lap event. She enjoyed an advantage of almost half a second over her strongest competitor throughout the event and reached the
medal rostrum for gold medal.
Campbell was the first swimmer to leap into the water. With her impressively strong strokes, she paved her way to the first turn by clocking a time of 35.88 seconds. She was trailed by Julie Dao of AUBN and Amy Maxwell of BLKC, who demonstrated their phenomenal
efforts in the first lap by occupying a joint second finish in the first lap.
Dao and Maxwell involved each other in a stroke-to-stroke battle and completed their first half of the race with an identical timing of 36.27 seconds.
With her smothering efforts, Campbell served notice of her talent and earned her way to the top of podium for gold medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 16.71 seconds.
The champion remained nearly three seconds above the record of 1 minute and 13.86 seconds, made by Ashleigh Steed of USWM, who occupied the title of same discipline during 2010.
After a while, the audience witnessed a stupendous effort of Dao, who surpassed her strongest competitor over the finishing wall for silver medal by producing a time of 1 minute and 17.15 seconds. She was trailed by Maxwell, who stayed 0.65 seconds slower
from her former finisher and ended her sprint in a time of 1 minute and 17.80 seconds.
The arena appreciated remarkable efforts of all position holders, who proved their eligibility for the podium. Furthermore, the championship will conclude on March 4 after the completion of all planned races.
