Michaella Krajicek dumps Marie-Eve Pelletier in first round – Bell Challenge 2011
22-year-old Dutch competitor, Michaella Krajicek, defeated the local wildcard entrant, Marie-Eve Pelletier, comprehensively in the opening round of Bell Challenge on Monday.
Krajicek took one hour and twenty five minutes of play to wrap up victory at 7-6(1), 6-3, to make it into the second round of the $220,000 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) tournament.
The contest was played on the hard courts of Quebec, Canada, with 138th ranked Dutch contestant winning the matchup in style. It was the 16th victory for Krajicek in the running year, with 14 losses to her
name already. She exhibited her brilliant tennis skills to overwhelm her bleak opponent in an assertive manner to move one step closer to the quarter-final draws of the Bell Challenge.
Pelletier played well in the earlier parts of the game but gradually lost her steam later to finish on the losing side in the end. The Canadian spilled a number of errant strokes all over the court, including five expensive double
faults as well, to award some easy points to the aggressive Dutch opponent. She had four break opportunities in the matchup but converted just one to her advantage, while Krajicek nailed two out of her three break chances en route to victory.
The unseeded Canadian was off to a flying start in the opening set and broke her opponent right away to lead 3-0 early in the match. Krajicek regrouped immediately and stung her first serve break of the day in the fifth game to
bring the Canadian back on even terms. A regular game was followed, which took the scores to 6-6, imposing a tie breaker round into play. Pelletier crumbled in the decider and secured just one point before losing the first set to Krajicek at 6-7(1).
Krajicek broke early in the second set to lead 3-0 and then held her lead till the last minute of the match. The Dutch wrapped up her straight sets victory at 6-3, to get through to the second round of Bell Challenge. She will
take on either the eighth seed Anna Tatishvili of Georgia or the French qualifier Julie Coin for a berth in the quarter-finals.
