Michaella Krajicek pounces over Yvonne Meusburger in the qualifiers – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Qualifier’s third seed, Michaella Krajicek, made a comeback from a set down to outsmart the Austrian starlet, Yvonne Meusburger, at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Monday. She formulated a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory against the world number 134 to reach the final
round of the qualifying competition in Indian Wells in California, United States.
The Dutch was nervous at times as she committed seven double faults and more unforced errors. However, she remained focused and pulled out the victory almost two hours in their fifth meeting. Krajicek crushed the Austrian in their last meeting at the Barnstaple
WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event.
Meusburger showed her best tennis in the opening set and easily pocketed entire serves after warding off the only breakpoint she came across. The Austrian cashed in the only break chance and bagged the opener with a 6-4 win.
The 23-year-old on the other hand made a fitting reply in the second set. She not only held entire serves but broke the Austrian’s serve twice to seal the equaliser with a breadstick.
Ranked 80th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Krajicek, blocked the only breakpoint she came across to hold her entire serves in the final set. She then capitalised on two out of five break opportunities to clinch the decider with a 6-2 score line.
All in all, the blooming Dutch produced a lower first serve share of 53 percent as compared to Meusburger’s 70 percent but brilliantly marked 36 out of 44 points on it. She then capped the match by firing five aces and winning 90 points.
Up next for Krajicek is the 14th seed, Mandy Minella, who battled past the local wild card entrant, Gail Brodsky, in a three set nail-biter to set-up this battle. The Luxembourgian lost her track in the second set but prevailed in the decider
to manipulate a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 success in almost two hours.
The ninth seed, Varvara Lepchenko, earned the limelight later that day. She slaughtered the Australian contender, Olivia Rogowska, with a breadstick. The American capitalised on half of the eight break opportunities to formulate a 6-1, 6-3 score line.
