Michaella Krajicek wins from a set down against Melinda Czink in final qualies – US Open 2011
The final qualie was played the same day of the second qualifying round of the US Open 2011. The two players contesting against each other on court 8 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center were Dutch Michaella Krajicek
against Hungarian Melinda Czink. The Dutch survived a first set slump with 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory in just 2 hours.
The two players had taken up the gauntlet in 2010 at the Family Circle Cup presented by Dove in Charleston and even though, Krajieck has a much lower ranking than Czink, she had won the match in two sets and was leading in the
head-to-head at 1-0.
Meeting for the second time Czink had taken the lead in her points and eventually by striking 2 aces won the game, to open the score card at 1-0. Both the players then won their games in their respective serves until the seventh
game and by the 8th game Czink was the first to break her opponent’s serve and took the lead at 5-3 and after winning a game on her serve, saw a quick victory of 6-3.
After the first set Czink was looking to bag yet another comprehensive victory against the Dutch but alas! That wish wasn’t granted and she saw a complete reversal of fate, resulting in her not even winning a single game against
world number 183 Michaella Krajicek.
Serving first was Krajicek who opened the set score to 1-0, she then went on to break her opponent in the second, and fourth game to lead the score card at 5-0. In the last game she did not let her opponent win the game and instead
broke her for the third time to see a flawless score of 6-0. Unfortunately for Czink she was unable to break her opponent even once during the game and had struck two double faults, costing her the second set.
By the end of the second set, the two had accomplished a set apiece and fought a 55 minute battle, until one of them came out victorious. Of course it was Krajieck as the crowd boosted her performance and she was able to display
a barrage of well placed drop shots.
As the players rallied each other out winning games one after another on respective serves, Krajicek was first to break her adversary and took the lead at 4-2. In the next two games the players again won on alternative serves and
this time it was Czink who broke Krajieck and won on her serve to even out the score at 5-5. During the eleventh game Kerber had won her game and thus arrived at a decisive stage in the game. If Czink won on her serve the match would go into a tie breaker,
but not wanting that to happen Krajieck pounced at the first opportunity to break her adversary in the twelfth game and ultimately won the set and the match.
By winning the last two sets the Dutch was able to secure a berth in the main draw of the US Open 2011.
