Michal Schmid trounces Andreas Siljestrom in qualifiers – Siberia Cup 2012 CH
Qualifying top seed, Michal Schmid from Czech Republic, got the better of the Swedish challenger, Andreas Siljestrom, in straight sets at the Siberia Cup 2012 on Sunday. He nudged up a 7-5, 6-4 victory against the Swedish veteran to progress into the final
round of the qualifying tournament at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Tyumen, Russia.
The seeded Czech required almost an hour to outshine Siljestrom in their first encounter. After registering this success, Schmid comfortably progressed into the final round of the qualifying competition.
Schmid assertively entered this indoor hard court tournament taking place from 19th to 25th November. He smoothly bagged his entire serves until he got the breakthrough in the 11th game. The Czech plucked his serve once again
and clinched the opener with a 7-5 score line. He blocked the only breakpoint he came across and converted one out of three break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 446th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Schmid lost his track towards the following set. He suffered the first blow in the sixth game and trailed at 2-4. However, the Czech unveiled his class after that and reeled the
last four games. He dusted away two out of three breakpoints he came across and cashed two out of three break chances to steal the spotlight.
The 23-year-old withstood seven aces and spilled more double faults. However, he clobbered a better first serve share of 61 per cent as compared to his rival’s 52 per cent and amazingly marked 29 out of 38 points on it. He ended the match with 67 points
and ruled throughout the battle.
Seeded second in this tournament, Sergey Betov from Belarus will accompany the top seed in the final qualifying round. He devastated the local contender, Evgeny Tikhonov, with double breadsticks in 39 minutes.
The Belarusian rising star was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed six out of nine break chances to formulate a stunning 6-0, 6-0 victory. He manifested a better first serve share of 58 per cent as compared to his rival’s 49 per cent and impressively
availed 17 out of 18 point on it.
