It is hard to compare eras, since times change over the years (better training, better equipment, etc.).  Plus, I never got to see guys like Mark Spitz or Jesse Owens or some of the other greats compete.  If conditions were same, could Phelps bet Spitz in race?

I would definitely say he is the best Olympian of our era.  But better ever, I don't know for sure.
