Michel Bourez and Adrian Buchan put in firing performances in Round 1 of 2012 Hurley Pro
French Polynesia’s Michel Bourez and Australia’s Adrian Buchan advanced straight into the third round at the 2012 Hurley Pro, sixth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in
their respective Round 1 heats that went down at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Sunday, September 16.
With Bourez clinching the win in the ninth heat, America’s Kolohe Andino and France’s Jeremy Flores rounded out the second and third position respectively, consequently getting relegated to the second round.
The tenth heat saw Buchan secure his place in the third heat after claiming top honours, while his compatriots Adam Melling and Julian Wilson finished in second and third place respectively, thus getting forced to take a trip to the relegation round.
The opening day of the event saw promising two-to-four foot waves on offer at the iconic beach-break of Lower Trestles, setting up a nice stage for the elite ASP surfers to put their exciting surfing prowess on display.
Pitted against Andino and Flores in the ninth heat, Bourez got off to a modest start, but loosened up as the heat progressed. He eventually locked his first business-wave to earn a 7.60 off his and soon backed it up with an 8.60-point ride, thus reaching
a heat-total of 16.20 points. The score held up until the end to earn him the win.
Andino finished in second place after earning a couple of scores in the six-point range off his best-two waves to eventually register a two-wave total of 13.30 points.
Flores finished third after earning a 6.67 and 6.03 off his best-two waves for a resultant heat-total of 12.70 points.
The tenth heat featured an outstanding performance by Buchan as he managed to get the better of his fellow countrymen in a three-man battle for the Round 3 spot.
Buchan got off to a good start, finding himself a 7.50-point ride to claim an early lead. After a lengthy and determined hunt, he eventually managed to get his hands on a superb 9.00-point ride, which took him to a heat-total of 16.50 points.
Melling responded with a 5.50 and 8.07 off his best-two waves to finish in second place with a heat-total of 13.57 points.
Wilson finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.66 points, which comprised of a 5.93 and 3.73-point ride.
