Michel Bourez and Kieren Perrow advance to 2011 Billabong Pipe Masters Quarter-Finals
The 2011 Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons kept the air at the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, electrified on Friday, December 9, as the Round 4 battles continued to feature the thrilling confrontations between the surfing heavy-weights. The third
heat saw Tahiti’s Michel Bourez take on Brazil’s Gabriel Medina and Hawaii’s Evan Valiere, whereas Australia’s Taj Burrow faced off with his compatriot Kieren Perrow and the Hawaiian talent, Shane Dorian, in the fourth heat.
Bourez put up a pretty impressive performance in the third heat to claim victory and consequently advance directly into the Quarter-Finals. Valiere finished in second place, whereas Medina rounded out the third position, which led to the relegation of both
the surfers into Round 5.
The fourth heat concluded with Perrow capturing victory through an excellent effort on his final wave. The win carried him off into the Quarter-Finals, while Dorian and Burrow rounded out the second and third position respectively, consequently getting relegated
to Round 5.
As the third heat got underway, Bourez got down to business right away and caught a wave to unload a combination of stylish tricks, earning 7.00 points for the effort. He soon followed it up with a 6.10-point wave to eventually with a heat-total of 13.10
points. The score served to earn him victory and carry him off into the Quarter-Finals.
Valiere had looked to be in impressive form during the previous rounds, but was unable to make much of an impact in his latest battle. He collected a couple of fives to finish with a resultant heat-total of 10.84 points.
Medina failed to hold his own during the battle and consequently finished in third place after scoring 8.17 points in total of his best two waves. As a result he, along with Valiere, got relegated to the fifth round.
The fourth heat saw the 34-year-old Perrow put forward a pretty decent performance to capture the win. Scoring a 3.83 off his first business-wave, the Australian made a pretty strong impact on his last wave, earning a 9.83 off it, to eventually finish with
a heat-total of 13.66 points. The score served to seal the fate of the battle in his favour and carried him off into the Quarter-Finals.
Dorian had gotten off to a solid start in the three-man battle, earning an 8.87 off his first business-wave, but failed to add another decent score to his account. He eventually had to settle for a heat-total of 11.87 points, which sent him to Round 5.
The lacklustre performance by the ASP World Tour-veteran, Burrow, came as a real surprise for everyone. The Australian was renowned for his ability to perform well in almost any type of conditions and was not expected to succumb to the firing 10-foot waves.
However, his poor selection of the waves and various wipe-outs kept him at a heat-total of 7.83 points, making him finish in third place. The disappointing effort got him relegated to the fifth heat to surf for the Quarter-Final spot once again.
