Michel Bourez and Roy Powers advance to Round 4 of Reef Hawaiian Pro 2011
The thrilling surfing action continued at Haleiwa, the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, as the Round of 64 (Round 3) of Reef Hawaiian Pro treated the crowd to a series of exciting battles between some of the best surfers from around the world. The 13th
heat saw Tahiti’s Michel Bourez square off with Brazil’s Jesse Mendes, Australia’s Jack Freestone and Hawaii’s Ian Gentil on Tuesday, November 22, while the action resumed on Wednesday, November 23, with Hawaii’s Roy Powers taking on Basque’s Aritz Aranburu,
Portugal’s Tiago Pires and Brazil’s Willian Cardoso in the 14th heat.
Bourez walked away with top honours from the 13th heat to confirm his place in the Round of 32 (Round 4), while Mendes followed him into the next round as well after securing runner-up place. Freestone and Gentil failed to come up with impressive
performance and consequently got ejected from the competition.
The 14th heat on day 3 of the competition saw Powers clinch a comfortably victory to secure his place in the fourth round, while Aranburu successfully extended his stay in the event through a runner-up finish. Pires and Cardoso rounded out the
third and fourth positions respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
As the 13th heat, which turned out to be the final heat of the day, got underway, the 25-year-old Bourez got down to business right away and caught a wave in the opening minutes to post a 6.17 on the score-board to take an early lead. Continuing
the charge, he followed his first impressive effort with yet another solid wave, this time adding an additional 7.17 points to his account to take his heat-total to 13.34 points. The score remained unbeatable and consequently carried him off to victory.
Mendes put up a remarkable performance, though he failed to get the scores required for top honours. He did, however, manage to stay alive in the competition by securing runner-up position by collecting a 5.50 and 6.37-point wave for a heat-total of 11.87
points.
Freestone finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.13 points, whereas Gentil rounded out the bottom position after finishing with a heat-total of 8.83 points. The lacklustre performances by the two surfers led to their removal from the competition
line-up.
As the sun rose on the next day, the competition resumed with the 14th heat of Round 3. Feeling fresh after a good night sleep, the 30-year-old Powers showcased an energetic performance and scored an impressive 6.50 and 7.77 off his top two waves
to get a heat-total of 14.27 points and clinch top honours.
Aranburu’s performance during the 20-minute battle was nothing short of impressive either and saw him collect a 5.50 and sensational 7.50-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 13.00 points.
The ‘Portuguese Tiger’ Pires finished in third place after failing to improve his heat-total of 11.43 points. Cardoso seemed to be still fighting with his sleep as he competed in the four-man battle and merely scored a 4.23 in total off his top-two waves.
Both the surfers were removed from the contention due to their bottom-two finish.
