Michel Bourez clinches the first heat of the day at Saquarema Surf Pro International Men’s Round of 96
The Men’s round of 96 at the 2011 Saquarema Surf Pro International got-off to a flying start with thrilling heats by Michel Bourez (PYF), who claimed the highest heat score of 11.50 out of 20, at Itauna, Saquarema, in Brazil, on Wednesday, May 25.
Jay Quinn of New Zealand was placed second with a total score of 11.27, while Leonardo Neves of Brazil earned the third spot with a score of 10.20 and Dale Staples wound up fourth with only 5.60 points in heat 1 of the Men’s round of 96.
Bourez said while speaking to reporters, “It’s still really difficult to surf. I’d say I’m at about 60% right now, but the ocean helped me out a lot today. The waves weren’t that powerful, which was good for me because I’m still in a lot of pain.”
Michael Bourez is currently placed at the 11th spot in the ASP World Rankings. Last week, he performed wonderfully against the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro champion, Adriano de Souza, in heat 4 of the quarter-final. Despite his spirited performance, he lost the match against the Brazilian surfer by a margin of 10.73 to 7.90 points.
In heat 2, Marc Lacomare of France notched the first place with a sterling score of 14.77, while Yadin Nicol of Australia earned second place honours with a total score of 12.00 and Alain Riou (PYF) came third with 11.57 points. Maxime Huscenot of France settled for fourth place with a total score of 10.50.
Lacomare said, “It’s my first time here in Saquarema. These kinds of waves really suit my style, I like them a lot. So much so that I was able to win the heat with one really good wave which I rode to the end. I like this place a lot. It´s really beautiful and I want to do my best here.”
The weather conditions were very hazy and uncomfortable for the surfers at 7:30 am, but improved by 11:30 am for the Men’s round of 96 at Saquarema.
