Michel Bourez collects a comprehensive victory in Round 3 of the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
French Polynesia’s Michel Bourez confirmed his place in the fourth round (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro after walking away with top honours from the 24th heat of Round 3 (Round of 96) that
went down at the renowned beach-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Wednesday, May 2.
France’s Romain Cloitre also advanced through into the fourth round of the competition following his second-place finish in the 24th heat of Round 3.
With promising surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site, the surfing fans got to witness a series of enthralling battles featuring some of the best talent from both America as well as other countries. The prestigious event title, along with
handsome prize purse and coveted ASP ranking points were effectively serving the purpose of motivating the surfers to hold nothing back during their battles to ensure their survival in the event.
The 24th heat of Round 3 saw Bourez squaring off with Cloitre, along with Hawaii’s Mason Ho and Koa Smith.
The 26-year-old Bourez got off to a slow start, collecting a series of average wave-scores. However, he continued to build momentum as the heat progressed and eventually locked a juicy right-hander to unload a string of powerful turns for a 9.27. Keeping
the momentum going, he backed it up with an 8.60-point wave in the dying minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 17.87 points. The two-wave total held up until the end of the heat to earn him the win.
“I didn’t know what score I had, I was just trying to try out my boards and see what felt good,” Bourez said during his post-heat interview. “When I heard I had a 9.2 and an 8.6 I knew I was in the lead and let the other surfers surf.”
Cloitre finished in second place after scoring a 7.50 off his first business-wave early in the heat and soon added an additional 5.67-point wave for a heat-total of 13.17 points.
Ho and Smith failed to make it through their very first heat of the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 11.87 and 9.80 points respectively.
