Michel Platini to be re-elected as UEFA President
If there is ever a man as ancient as time who has performed services for the benefit of football all his life then only one name comes to mind and that is of Michel Platini. It has now been officially confirmed that the 55-year-old will be re-elected as
the President of UEFA.
Initially, some media reports had suggested that the former legendary French striker will retain his current position for the next 4 years also, unimpeded by the appointment process.
But, UEFA itself has now officially confirmed that the former French international from Juventus is all set to be re-elected in the elections due to take place during the XXXV Ordinary UEFA Congress in Paris on 22nd of March, 2011.
A statement on UEFA's website read, “The regulations governing the implementation of the UEFA Statutes (Article 4.1) stipulate that candidates for the position of president of UEFA must be proposed in writing to the UEFA administration at least three months
before the date set for the opening of the Congress.”
It added, “The cut-off deadline of December 22, 2010 has passed for submissions of candidacy for the position of UEFA President. As of December 23, 2010, only one candidate has been announced: current UEFA president Michel Platini will be seeking a second
four-year term of office from 2011 to 2015.”
The statement further explained the election process, stating, “Meanwhile, the cut-off deadline for the remaining positions up for election at the UEFA Congress in Paris will be January 22, 2011. These remaining positions concern seven members of the UEFA
Executive Committee. Also, the Paris Congress will see the election of a FIFA vice-president and a FIFA Executive Committee member.”
Platini has no doubt reformed the football on a global scale. The sport fans and boards will surely not be willing to lose him after all he is a man with a mission who has proved a lot so far but still has so much left to prove.
