Michele Scarponi replies to Dr. Ferrari accusations
Michele Scarponi replied to the claims made by Gazzetta dello Sport, publishing the extracts from police documents about the conversations between the Dr. Ferrari and Team Lampre-ISD cyclist.
The news agency quoted the discussion as, "(Scarponi) tells Ferrari that he could have won the Giro, and Ferrari replies that if he'd had a bag, he could have had a chance".
He finished fourth during the Giro d’Italia 2010 and was declared an overall winner of the 2011 version of the race after Alberto Contador faced a disqualification for using clenbuterol.
However, Scarponi who has always denied working with the controversial Doctor came well prepared as he replied to the accusations in a press release through his agent Raimondo Scimone.
The cyclist had undergone only one doping test, spread over to two days, with the Italian Doctor.
The 59-year-old Doctor was banned by the Italian Olympic Committee in 2002 and now Scarponi is at risk for working with him previously in his career.
Filippo Pozzato received the same sort of suspension, after USADA handed him a three-month ban for working with Ferrari.
“There is only one truth: In September 2010, on my own initiative, I did a test, divided over two different days, in the presence of Dr. Ferrari,” Scarponi noted.
“After I signed my contract with Lampre, which started on January 1, 2011, I followed the orders of the team and the Mapei Center for all my preparation and training.”
Doping is currently a very hot topic in the sports of Cycling and fans all across the world have raised their suspicions towards the game.
As many as 24 cyclists have recently recorded their testimony against one of the most trusted cyclist, Lance Armstrong and 11 out of the mentioned 24 were his previous team-mates.
USADA gave a 1000 word detailed verdict on the disgraced cyclist and proved that he was accustomed to systematic doping previously in his career.
Armstrong has now been disqualified from all his seven overall victories at the Tour de France, through 1999-2005 after it has been proved that he used unfair means and cheated in order to secure the top podium position.
