Please can someone define Michelin Star and let me know if there are any such restaurants in Montreal? Also, do French restaurants have main meal options for vegetarians (no meat, chicken or fish) - if yes please recommend a French restaurant. Thank you.

  1. The Michelin Star rating system began in France.  The highest rating they give is 3 stars, but even getting 1 is a very good thing.

As far as I know, the only city outside of France that has gotten rated is New York.  I only know one restaurant in New York that got 1 star off the top of my head, and that's the Spotted Pig.  It's a small pub in the village that takes no reservations, apparently co-owned by Jay-Z and Bono.

I assume the next city on their list would be London, England if they haven't already been there.

  2. what

  3. Michelin stars are given out, and some cities and countries have Michelin guides, which describe/rate the restaurants. Montreal is not rated in any Michelin guide, so there are no Michelin starred restaurants there.

  4. As a former chef and being familiar with Montreal and its restauant sence, in Canada it is the diamond rating system by either the CAA or AAA, some of the local papers like the Journal de Montreal have rated places, and magazines may give a number of forks based on there rating.

In Montreal the best idea for french restaurants and there are many are the Journals and the Yellow Page's City Pages for Montreal and there recommendations.

Michelin does some ratings in North America, mostly US and only states like N.Y and California and some from Florida.
