Michelle Cefal wins Women’s 200m butterfly prelims – Speedo Junior National Championships
Michelle Cefal of Tualatin Hills Swim Club won the qualification rounds of Women’s 200m butterfly on first day of the 2012 Speedo Junior National Championships at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis on Monday, August 13.
The 16-year-old Cefal demonstrated her stupendous efforts in the preliminary rounds of the four-lap discipline and secured the fastest qualification spot into the final round.
With her scintillating form in the race, Cefal stayed half body length ahead of her following swimmer and touched the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 13.30 seconds for first position.
With her epic pace, she remained 0.57 seconds ahead of Taylor Katz of Sarasota YMCA Sharks, who proved her mettle for second best qualification spot of the event by touching the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 13.87 seconds.
Katz was followed by Sonia Wang of The Claremont Club, who stayed only 0.48 seconds behind and tapped the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 14.35 seconds.
Fourth fastest qualification spot of the event was obtained by Kathryn McLaughlin of Mission Viejo Nadadores, who stayed only 0.30 seconds behind and hit the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 14.65 seconds.
Similarly, McLaughlin was trailed by Madison Wright of Kingfish Aquatic Club, who remained only 0.03 seconds behind and finished fifth in the race by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 14.68 seconds.
Sixth fastest qualification spot of the event was obtained by Katelyn Sowinski of Eagle Swim Team, who was only 0.70 seconds slower from her former finisher and reported a time of 2 minutes and 15.38 seconds.
Sowinski was traced by Caitlin Casazza of SwimMAC Carolina, who was 0.11 seconds apart and secured seventh position with a timing of 2 minutes and 15.49 seconds.
Last qualification spot of the event was obtained by Anna Quinn of Conejo Simi Swim Club, who remained just a stroke behind and ended eighth with an effort of 2 minutes and 15.66 seconds.
In addition, Cefal was excited with her top finish in the prelims and was hopeful of continuing the same in the playoff.
