Michelle Coleman wins Women’s 100m backstroke gold: Day two – 2012 Swedish Grand Prix, Uppsala
Michelle Coleman went home swelling with pride by winning the title of Women’s 100m backstroke on day two of the 2012 Swedish Grand Prix in Uppsala, Sweden on Sunday, February 5.
Coleman, who grabbed silver medal of the 100m freestyle earlier at the championship, elevated her efforts in the backstroke playoff and occupied gold medal of the event.
The 18-year-old Swedish veteran upset her opponents with a daunting effort in the two-lap backstroke event. With her determination and unimaginable skills, Coleman remained in a strong position for gold medal.
She faced ruthless aggression of Ida Lindborg in the 100m race, but managed to prevail over her on the finishing end. Lindborg remained dominant in the first lap, where she clocked a time of 31.38 seconds. Her effort was 0.02 seconds faster from Coleman, who stood second fastest at the end of initial lap, as she posted an effort of 31.40 seconds.
The second lap saw immaculate efforts of both competitors, who struggled hard to overwhelm each other. Lindborg tried to outperform her strongest competitor in the second lap of the race but her effort to redeem her pride was interrupted by Coleman on the finishing end.
Coleman snatched gold medal of the event by finishing her swim in a time of 1 minute and 03.35 seconds. She was followed by Lindborg, who remained 0.49 seconds slower from her and emerged on the podium for silver medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 03.84 seconds.
Subsequently, the silver medallist faced no trouble from her closest competitor, Linnea Olsson, who stayed considerably slower from Lindborg throughout the event. Olsson remained nearly two seconds behind her former finisher and hustled towards the concluding wall for third position by submitting an effort of 1 minute and 05.44 seconds.
The spectators admired scintillating struggles of all contestants in the backstroke discipline whereas the winners received a huge round of applause from the audience for their notable efforts in the event.
In addition, the position holders collected awards and accolades for their untouchable efforts in the double lap event after the completion of second day’s session.
