Michelle Li stuns Ai Goto to claim Women’s Singles title at XVII Peru International 2012
Canada Michelle Li was in her prime form when she proved her mettle on the final day and secured Women’s Singles title after defeating the higher ranked Ai Goto of Japan in the title match of XVII Peru International 2012 in Peru, on Sunday, April 15.
The second seed Michelle was impressive as she snapped the heel of Goto who was the top seed in Women’s Singles main draw of the championship.
Michelle played tremendous badminton without dropping her speed in the whole contest and emerged as title winner in a striking fashion.
On the other hand, the top seed Goto failed to live up to expectations on the final day as she failed to stretch her winning run and lost the final contest in three games of 64 minutes.
The starting set of this title match was mouth watering when both ladies put up entertaining show as they played to their maximum speed and also progressed in the first half without setting up any lead.
They worked really hard to dictate the pace of rallies but no one could get a better position in the game until the one-minute break.
After the break, they continued playing at their best without dropping down the pace of rallies and reached at 21-21 when Michelle lost her control in the game and also lost the set with a margin of 21-23.
In the second set, Michelle was everywhere in the court as she surprised the crowd with her impressive craft in the contest.
She showed no mercy to Goto in this game and took a wonderful until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Michelle continued her stunning run in the second game and managed to win it with a remarkable margin of 21-14.
In the deciding set, Goto tried to place her shots in right areas but failed to create trouble for her Canadian rival who was playing on a different level. Until the break, Michelle was in comfortable position on the board.
After the break, the Canadian faced no problem from her higher ranked Japanese contestant and won the set with an impressive 21-15 score on the board.
Michelle grabbed the title while beating the top seed with an impressive 21-23, 21-14 and 21-15 score on the board.
