Michelle Wie bows out of Navistar LPGA Classic 2012 despite big aims
American Michelle Wie ruined her chances of clinching the third Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) triumph at the Navistar LPGA Classic 2012, held last week at Prattville, Alabama, United States.
Wie displayed a woeful performance at one of the most prestigious LPGA events as she failed to make the cut, letting lesser-known rivals cruise past her on the leaderboard.
In the 2010 LPGA season, Wie successfully added a much-needed triumph to her profile by winning the CN Canadian Women’s Open in August.
Her performance at the CN Canadian Women’s Open was nothing short of amazing as she started to tighten the noose on her archrivals right from the beginning of the tournament. She grabbed a three-shot victory against American Kristy McPherson, Suzann Pettersen, Jee Young Lee and Jiyai Shin of South Korea.
The battle at Prattville rattled Wie as she could not score below 70 in the first two rounds. Having posted a 71 in the opening round, the American golfer got off to a rickety start and kept faltering on most of the holes.
Heading into the second round that saw most of the contenders card big scores, Wie missed plenty of chances to score well and she ended up recording a 73 on the leaderboard.
Still known as one of the most famous female golfers on the LPGA, Wie has shown her golf-crazy fans some of the most stunning finishes. But ever since she lost her momentum, the LPGA titan has rarely been able to string together solid rounds to win any of the Tour’s tournaments.
That trend has persisted in the current season as well. Wie’s performance at the Kingsmill Championship 2012 and the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012 had been below average as she failed to make the cut.
Her stats show that she has missed the cut in 10 tournaments in the current season — something taking a serious toll on her overall performance and confidence.
The Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 that was held a few days back at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Wirral, United Kingdom, saw Wie in a much different shape as she displayed a far better performance, finishing tied for the 13th position.
Moreover, the Safeway Classic 2012 was also the scene of relentless battle where the struggling American took the 8th position on the leaderboard.
