Michelle Wie crashes down to tie for 12th in second round of Lorena Ochoa Invitational
American Michelle Wie crashed down to a tie for the 12th position in the second round of Lorena Ochoa Invitational 2012 after she carded a 75 on Friday.
Wie, who is one of the past winners of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament as she won the 2009 edition, looked far too complacent in the second round, missing several
good chances.
The American star got off to a stellar start as she carded a 66 to share the lead with Angela Stanford and Candie Kung. The opening round, which saw Wie fire six birdies, went without bogeys
and she handled the ball well on the fairways and greens.
Speaking to the LPGA Tour on Thursday, Wie said that she was pretty confident right from the start as her putting helped her greatly on most of the holes.
“You know I got a hot start make a couple of birdies in the first holes, I felt good, I felt like I played pretty consistently today, some up and downs,” said Wie who is being regarded as
favourite for the title this year, as she herself has pledged to repeat the 2009 performance.
“I really need to take more advantage on the par five; you know I only made one birdie on the par five, so I feel that if I take more advantage of that it would be good. But overall, I´m feeling
very good”.
In the second round on Friday, the fan-favourite star played clumsily on most of the holes and dented her confidence right from the first hole.
Having started the round with a double bogey on the first hole, Wie’s first-round reputation was badly shaken and she struggled with her putts throughout the day.
She made a birdie on the second hole in an attempt to regain her composure, but a bogey on the par-4 5th rattled her once again. Wie carded her second bogey on the 9th.
On the back nine, the 2009 winner tried to get back into contention, but all her efforts could garner was two birdies on the 10th and 12th hole. To further dent her position,
she carded another two bogeys on the 11th and 18th.
