Michigan Wolverines AD sticking with timetable
Michigan Wolverines athletic director Dave Brandon has said he will not be evaluating head coach Rick Rodriguez’s progress until the end of the season. Brandon made it clear that he always waits until season’s end to evaluate coaches and will not be making
an exception.
Michigan has endured an up-and-down season, playing extremely well in their non-conference games, going undefeated through their first five meetings. However, when the Wolverines began conference play they struggled against difficult opponents in the Big
Ten. The club went on to drop their next three games. They were able to briefly turn it around by winning two, but have fallen flat, losing their final two matches of the season.
Rodriguez has been credited with developing an extremely potent offence, which is based around star quarterback Dernard Robinson. Rodriguez has managed to develop a very effective ground game, which ranks 11th in the country. Moreover, he has
helped Robinson develop a more proficient passing game, which sees the Wolverines enjoying the nation’s 34th best passing offence.
However, where Rodriguez has succeeded on offence he has decidedly failed on defence. The Wolverines have the nation’s worst overall defence, allowing an average of 33.8 points per game, good enough for 102nd in the country.
Rodriguez has been criticised for his one-dimensional style of play, scoring plenty of points, but unable to stop the other team from scoring.
Nevertheless, the head coach enjoyed his best season with the club in 2010, attaining bowl eligibility for the first time in three seasons. Michigan went 7-5 this year, while earning a 3-5 record against conference opponents.
The Wolverines' bowl eligibility will keep Brandon from examining Rodriguez’s contract for at least another month.
The Wolverines are currently expected to play in the Insight Bowl, which takes place on 28 December.
