Michigan awaits the staging of the US Senior Open
In 2009, the Buick Open was scheduled to be played in southeast Michigan and it was the last time that the local golf fans enjoyed the staging of a significant golf tournament in the region.
However, the staging of the US Senior Open at the Indianwood Golf & Country Club in July has brought cheers to the golf communities in the area.
The Senior PGA Championship was held at Benton Harbor last week. However, it was not as close to the Motor City as it was to the Windy City.
"This will probably be Tom Watson's last championship of any significance in Michigan and I think people should understand that," US Senior Open senior director Tim Flaherty said Wednesday at the tournament's media day. "I don't want to write anybody off,
but there's a lot of great players and this might be the last time they play in Detroit".
It is rather unlucky for the local fans that they rarely have an opportunity to watch golf super stars playing on the local golf courses.
A few years ago, the Buick Open lost its sponsorship contract and the officials stopped the operations after spending years at the Grand Blanc.
The Oakland Hills Golf Club hosted the Ryder Cup and PGA Championship in 2004 and 2008 respectively. The next time it will host any big event will be in 2016 when the US Amateur will be staged for the first time in the region.
In addition to that, the Senior Players Championship also became a part of the history after the Ford Motor Co. announced in 2006 that it was not able to fund the event anymore.
Olin Browne, the defending US Senior Open Champion commented about the venue of the event, saying it all depends on a player that how he can turn the course in his favour.
"The hard holes are easy when you play them well," he said. "And, the easy holes are hard when you mess them up".
The USGA executive Jeff Hall is confident about the success of the event this year at Indianwood. He said that it will be all about shot-making rather than gaining length during the tournament.
