Question:

Michigan motorcycle registration question

I'll be buying a bike on Friday. I had another bike that I sold, so I already have a plate. The problem is, I'll be going to get the bike later that night and SOS will be closed. How can I register it that day? The guy lives an hour away so I don't want to make 2 trips, nor do I want to pay him and leave it there.

  1. In Michigan it's legal to ride or drive a vehicle home without plate if you just bought it.

  2. pick it up in a truck, or rent a m/c trailer and trailer it home that nite

  3. Does your plate have a current tag on it?

Honestly if it was me I would slap my plate on it and bring it home. Make sure you are carrying proof of insurance for it and drive conservative.

Yeah, I know it isn't legal, but unless you are speeding or such chances of being stopped are slim. If you are stopped you have a pretty good excuse since you are transporting it directly home not just out for a cruise on an unregistered bike. Cop can see you are insured and have a bill of sale.

I also figure you will have a car following you home so cop won't even be directly behind you.
