Mick Channon’s young charge Cay Verde scores in the Emirates Equestrian European Breeders Fund Marble Hill Stakes
The two-year-old Cay Verde was a delightful surprise for his connections when he landed a victory in the Emirates Equestrian European Breeders Fund Marble Hill Stakes at Curragh on 26th May, 2012, where he was the mount for jockey, Richard Hughes.
The son of Bahamian Bounty, out of mare All Quiet, was not expected to notch this one since he had a 5-2 shot of winning, but he started working well with Hughes and gained pace when it was most needed, which resulted in him breaking through the wire first,
¾ of a length before Dylanbaru, whereas the race favourite, Infanta Branca, finished third.
The winning rider spoke of the victor and appreciated his efforts as he said:
"He's a fabulous little horse. I always thought I was doing a bit much in front but the longer I sat on him, the better he got and he took two lengths out of the field very quick. I just said to Mick 'he's got that little dash and I'd use it to full effect'."
Mick Channon’s charge flew past the competition which ended well for him, but this not a big surprise for the trainer since he knew the runner’s true potential.
The bay colt won the McGee Group Maiden Stakes at Ascot on 12th May, 2012, where he had a 11-2 chance, and emerged victorious as he defeated Kevin Ryan’s charge, Hototo by 2 ½ lengths, under jockey, Martin Harley.
Channon was also ecstatic over the young runner’s win as he told the press:
"He isn't very big, but he's got a lot of quality. He (Hughes) said he's got so much ability, so much speed. He'll probably go to the Norfolk Stakes, I wouldn't hesitate now (taking him to Royal Ascot). He'll also get an entry in the Windsor Castle as well,
they're his choices."
The Box 41 owned colt who was whelped on 17th February, 2010, has buckets of potential and he is setting himself for some massive victories in upcoming races.
Cay Verde started his career in a respectable fashion as he finished fifth among eleven runners in the Compton Beauchamp Estates Ltd E B F Maiden Stakes, but his true potential is just coming to surface.
