Mick Fanning focused on collecting results instead of worrying about fate of 2012 ASP World Tour
Current frontrunner for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Title Mick Fanning from Australia admitted that he is not thinking about his position in the race for the prestigious honours yet.
In an exclusive interview with Stab Magazine, the former two-time ASP World Champion conceded that he is currently concentrating on collecting results and building points instead of thinking about where he stands in the race.
“At the moment, I’m not thinking about it. The way I look at it, I’ve got three results out of four. When it comes down to it, you wanna finish the year with at least nine results. So that’s three results I don’t have to get now. I’ve got those ones in the
kitty. It’s all about making up the numbers. It doesn’t matter who else is in the race, you still need those results. I look at it as a whole,” he said.
The 31-year-old Australian surfer believes it is too early to start guessing where the tour is headed, especially with the likes of America’s Kelly Slater and Australia’s Joel Parkinson sitting at second and third place respectively.
Talking about his approach to competitive surfing in recent times, Fanning conceded that he does not worry about getting results. Instead, he is more interested in putting on a good show and impressing his own self rather than worrying about others are expecting
or thinking of him.
The New South Wales-based surfer is having an excellent run at the latest season of the ASP World Tour. Despite getting off to an ordinary start at the first stop of the elite tour in Australia, finishing in 13th place, the Australian immediately
stepped up and began to make amends.
He managed to claim top honours at Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and backed it up with a third-place finish at Billabong Rio Pro in Brazil.
The inaugural Volcom Fiji Pro at Tavarua in Fiji saw Fanning continuing his excellent form. After putting on a series of exquisite performances in barrelling conditions, he managed to reach the semi-finals before getting eliminated.
The campaign for the ASP World Title will continue with Billabong Pro Teahupoo that is scheduled to go down in French Polynesia from August 16-27.
