Mickelson files complaint after slanderous statements made on Internet
The golfer Phil Mickelson has reportedly lodged a complaint against an internet company in Quebec, Canada, to obtain the identity of the person who has made slanderous statements against him on the internet.
The golf star claimed that statements made by the said person were denting his reputation. He has decided to take the issue to the court, rather than settling it on his own.
In the complaint against the entity, Videotron S.E.N.C, which he filed in the Superior Court of Quebec, Mickelson has mentioned some comments posted on Yahoo Sports dated November 11 and 12.
The posted comments said that a person or persons using the nicknames "Fogroller" and "Longtitude" made some bold comments about Mickelson.
Those comments said that his wife has had an extramarital affair with someone and that the American golfer is the father of an illegitimate child.
Expressing his anger over the defamatory statements, Mickelson said that he was deeply saddened by this and he reserves the right to take action against it.
Talking to the media, Mickelson added that he will use all the available sources to voice his concerns and he is sure that such a thing will not happen to anyone again.
The 41-year-old star believes that this is a direct assault on his hard-earned reputation.
He stated that his lawsuit requires Videotron to identify the person, cease the gossip and redress for the harm he suffered. The complaint was presented in Montreal, January 25.
Mickelson’s attorney Glenn Cohen informed that the company against which his complainant was filed will gladly act according to the law.
He confirmed that Videotron will share the accused person’s information. "If we can stop one person, then it's one less person who can get away with this," Cohen said.
He went on, "Maybe it will have a chilling effect. I don't know. If other people are victims of this and want to take up the mantra, that's fine. It was a very narrow decision Phil and I made to discover this person's identity and stop it".
Mickelson was originally directed to the Superior Court of San Diego County, November 21, to obtain comments from the Yahoo. He disclosed that "Fogroller" was later identified as a resident of Montreal.
