http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s newly appointed coach Mickey Arthur has backed veteran batsmen Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey, who have been struggling to perform in Test cricket.
The duo has been unable to live up to the expectations of the team in a recently played two match Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754. However, Arthur believes they still have a lot to offer in the longest version of the game and will be a part of the upcoming
series against India.
According to the South African, “We're certainly not managing yet how they [Ponting and Hussey] go out of the side. In my opinion they've still got big roles to play because we do need some experience within our middle order, there's no doubt about it. They
bring that experience that we need.”
He further went onto add, “We haven't even come to any thought on how we manage any exit on any of those players. The key for us is to get them up firing ... on Boxing Day, because they're key.”
Australia are scheduled to hold a four match Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, starting from December 26, 2011. There are some changes expected in the squad, as some of the players have been unable to make an impression against the Black Caps.
One of the changes will be axing opener Phil Hughes, who failed to score runs consistently over the past one year.
The left-handed opener will most probably be replaced by all-rounder http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Watson-c2558, who was out of action after suffering an injury during the South African series.
However, there is still a question mark over Watson’s batting position, as he is not considered to be an ideal batsman at the top of the order in Test cricket.
The veteran all-rounder has been opening the innings for his team in all three formats of the game, but might be demoted to bat in the middle-order against India.
Other than this, Pakistani-born batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Usman-Khawaja-c2729 was also expected to face the axe, but he might now retain his place in the team following uncertainty over Shaun Marsh’s return to Test cricket.
The latter suffered a back problem during the South African tour and has been ruled out of the practice game against the Men in Blue.
