Microeconomic causes of Ford's financial crisis?

What would be the microeconomic causes of GM and Ford's financial crisis over the last few years, as well as possible options/solutions in the short term and long term to make their business turn around?

They were risking too much in some segments, some sectors of their activities did not required so much investments, but some needed much more attention.

In general it was right/wrong investment and competition issue.

But it is actually easy now to discuss it because we already know outcomes and events.

Current situation might be improved by newer technologies to keep-up within modern trends of demand taking into account energy-efficiency. But it is sort of standard answer.
