  1. you can't.

instead just put your descriptive name in row 1. then go to Window > Freeze pane and row 1 will be "locked" into place so when you scroll down, row 1 is always visible.

trust me, it's impossible to change them.  If you didn't have columns A, B, etc. how would enter a formula?

    =Some descriptive name1 * some other descriptive name2

    ?

the only way you might have "thought" the other person did this was enter the names in row one, freeze the panes and then turn OFF the display of the column headings.  To turn them off go to Tools > Options.  On the "view" tab there's an option to display the column/row indicators.  Turn off the option and you won't see the A,B,C or row 1, 2, 3. etc.

  2. You can't change A, B, C., etc. jmorge gave you the right information, except for one thing. To freeze panes, you must have a blank row below the one you are using as a header. You place the cursor in that blank row and click on Window (above) then click on Freeze Panes. You remove the pane freeze the same way.

  3. I don't think you can change those. You can put descriptive names in the first row of each column.

If you come to know how to change them, please let us know.
