Give Google Docs & Spreadsheets a try.  Their presentations program works the same as Microsoft Powerpoint and is also compatible.  Best part is that it's free!

Powerpoint is not a free program.

You could try OpenOffice which is free.

You are able to download a 60 day free trial of Office 2007 from Microsoft.

And to purchase it, they've lowered the price to $110 for the home/student version! If you really need Powerpoint this is the way to go so that you can get updates/service packs etc.
