every time i try to open it, it doesn't respond. I was typing something, and now i can't get to it. It auto-saved, but i don't know how to get to it. Does it matter that i have vista? Do i have to un-install it and install it again? i don't know what to do.

  1. Word 2000 should work just fine with Windows Vista.  See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/Prob... for troubleshooting steps.

If Word will start in safe mode, but not in normal mode, then the usual cause is a corrupt Normal.dot global template. Two other possible causes are a corrupt or inaccessible printer driver, or an incompatible third-party add-in for Word.

Close Word and Outlook, and use Windows Explorer or My Computer to rename the Normal.dot template in your User Templates folder to Normal.old or Normal.bad or something else.  In Word, you can click on Tools | Options | File Locations to see where your User Templates folder is.  In Windows Vista, the default User Templates folder is usually C:\Users\<username>\AppData\ Roaming\Microsoft\Templates.  You will need to enable display of hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer or My Computer to see this folder.
