Question:

Microsoft Word Problem- Round 2?

I posted this yesterday, but none of the answers helped me, so here goes again:

I am suddenly having issues opening Word documents. Word opens fine, but if I ty to open an existing file, either off of a jump drive or off the desktop, I get the following error message:

The File (Whatever) is not available.

So I click OK, and it's just a blank page; Word has not completely opened. When I X out of Word, this comes up:

The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?

No matter what I click (yes, no), the Save As tab opens up, with file name: Normal and Save as Type: Document Template.

Nothing happens no matter what I click. How do I fix this so I can open my existing Word documents?

Thanks!

PS: I do not have an address bar when I open My Computer and I do not use Norton Antivirus.

  1. try deleting the normal.dot file.

  2. I recall a problem like this at a previous company I worked with. If I remember correctly it was an issue with the Normal.dot file (The Standard Template File for Word Documents).

I suggest you simply delete this file - use your search function and look for the location of Microsoft's .dot files :)

Deleting this template file will allow Word to recreate a new one and hopefully resolve the error you are currently experiencing.

  3. Uninstall Office and reinstall properly - close all other programs while installing and wait until it is completely finished before working on your computer again.

  4. I do not believe there is any thing wrong with the MS Word installed in your system.

Your system should have infected with Virus. I suggest you to install and run an antivirus software immediately.

If you dont want to buy any of these software, then you can also get antivirus software for free. There are some Free antivirus softwares you can download (which are legal).

Some of them are - AVG 8.0, Avast. I suggest for AVG, which is free and more effective.

  5. well i would try Open Office  free @ openoffice.org  then load a fresh copy of word or office.

then get the office trial to run with

  6. Delete your Normal.dot template.  If you have a version earlier than 2007, check out this website that will help you locate the Normal.dot template if you can't find it -- just scroll down to where it says "To Find Normal.dot":  http://word.mvps.org/FAQS/Customization/...

If you're using 2007, then I'm not sure where to find the Normal.dot since they changed the way it works in 2007.  You can check out this article which explains that: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libra...

If deleting your Normal.dot doesn't work, you may want to try to repair Word. Again, this is for versions before 2007 - check out this article and scroll down to "How to Repair or Reinstall Office Programs."

    Hope this helps.
