Microsoft Xbox 360 universal media remote wont work any ideas?

I have had my remote for around two years i don't use it often, i recently bought an elite and was trying to set up my media centre with the helpful button on the remote but it wont work, i have managed to get it to work with my Samsung tv so it can't be that the remote isn't working, could it be set to work on my old Xbox360? and if so how do i change that?

In the System Setting of the Xbox there is a setting for the remote, if you use a normal remote or the universal media remote.

Set it to the appropriate setting.
