Microsoft and Sony holding back gaming – Video Games Update
Square Enix claims that extending the life cycle of the consoles is the biggest mistake ever by Microsoft and Sony.
Following the success of the Nintendo Wii, both Microsoft and Sony have their sights set towards casual gamers. Sony announced the Playstation Move, a motion controller for the Playstation 3 which is very similar to that of the Nintendo Wii. Microsoft went
one step further and brought out the Kinnect sensor, which is a camera which detects full body motion, for the Xbox 360.
By launching the two new products, the two companies claimed that the life of their hardware has increased significantly. This is not the case as the motion controls are just accessories which do not affect the hardware limitations of the consoles.
Square Enix claims that this generation has gone on long enough and it’s time for Microsoft and Sony to bring new hardware to the market. The main reason behind this is Square Enixs’ newly developed Luminous Engine which was unveiled at this year’s Electronic
Entertainment Expo (E3). The tech demo at E3 was running on a high end PC with an nVidia 680 GTX graphics card.
Square Enix hasn’t stated whether or not the new engine is compatible with the current generation consoles but judging by their stance on pushing back next generation consoles, it is pretty obvious that the engine doesn’t support the current ones.
"This generation has been way too long, and I say this because you have a lot of developers that work on a new platform, and perhaps will not succeed, so they will wait for the next generation, and will jump on that platform,” claims Square Enixs’ worldwide
technology director Julien Marceron. He also says that the long life-span of the current generation consoles is responsible for the rise of other platforms such as Apples’ iOS, Facebook gaming and Android.
Reports suggest that Microsoft will be bringing out the next Xbox by the end of 2013 while Sony has claimed that it will not like to be beaten by Microsoft to the market again but it believes in quality over rushing the product and sources claim that development
of the Playstation 4 has been underway since August 2010.
