Microsoft claim Crysis developer CryTek have a thing for the Kinect
It seems that CryTek, the studio that gave the world the visually stunning Crysis series, has a fancy for the Kinect, Microsoft’s motion controlled peripheral.
In what turned out to be an almost heart to heart interview with Phil Spencer, Microsoft Game Studio’s Vice President, the executive revealed how the electronics giant wished to make CryTek one of their first party developers.
Phil admitted Microsoft wanted to have the studio on-board quite some time ago, “The first time we met with (Cevat Yerli, CryTek’s CEO) and the team was around seven or eight years ago, and we started talking about what it'd mean for them to become first
party.”
However, it seemed Microsoft and CryTek had different plans at the time, which meant neither party would get what they wanted if they were to go through with the deal; CryTek were apparently working on Crysis, which was similar to the majority of titles
already on the Xbox.
Phil continued, “And it was a process of what do you guys want to do, what's unique for us, and they were just going to do Crysis, and they'd just come out of Far Cry, and we said we've probably got enough military future shooters, so go do that.”
However, it seems all of that is set to change with CryTek wanting to work on a title for Kinect, which, luckily for Microsoft, is not another first person shooter.
Phil boasted that CryTek were working on a new game for Kinect and that it would be the first of many.
“Then they came up with this idea around Ryse, and now they've really fallen in love with Kinect, and it's a perfect marriage for us,” he added.
Ryse is set to be the first Microsoft Kinect game which will use the entire gamers’ body as a motion controller. What this means is that rather than using just ones hands or arms to issue commands, or trigger actions, a gamer will be able to use his entire
body.
This seems rather intriguing and sounds like the type of game that will finally use the full potential of the Kinect, especially if one looks at the type of game Ryse is set to be.
The game is set in Ancient Roman times and is a first-person brawler and if CryTek can recreate the same level of visual brilliance, which it did in both Crysis and Crysis 2, then the game truly will be a sight to behold.
It seems Microsoft is serious about turning the Kinect into a platform which can attract hardcore gamers by attempting to bring more AAA titles for the motion controlled device.
However, without a demo or gameplay footage it is hard to judge whether Ryse is just another gimmick or a revolution in the world of gaming. Only time will tell, though it is an exciting prospect nonetheless.
