Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Studios, has stated that Microsoft are committed to the Xbox 360 for the long-term amidst news of the Xbox 720 currently being in development.
Microsoft has the upper hand when it comes to dominating the market in terms of hardware as it has outsold its closest competitor, Sony’s PlayStation 3, every year since its release. The PlayStation 3 has made a comeback and come on strongly in recent years, yet the 360’s dominance in North America has made the difference as the console continues to sell well on a consistent basis.
However, many are becoming increasingly hesitant on investing in the current generation of hardware as the next-gen of consoles seem to be drawing ever closer. In fact, anyone who wants to buy a console is seriously considering purchasing a Nintendo Wii U seeing how that is the first of the next generation of consoles to hit the market.
Spencer took a moment to assure fans that they would not be giving up on the Xbox 360 anytime soon and that they had plans to ensure that content and games would be made available for the console for some time to come.
He said, "Right now the Xbox 360 is really healthy and it's doing incredibly well," before continuing, "I think the 360 has a lot more than two years [left]. It has legs for a long time.”
Spencer went on to state that, "The nice thing about the Xbox 360 right now is we're the number one console globally. We're able to bring in new content and still support the best of the core games.”
The head of Microsoft Studios also added how he believed that the console had matured and that allowed for the best content to be made available. "It's a platform that has really reached scale; this is the time when you really see the great content showing up."
As for how much longer one could expect content to be made available for the 360, Spencer added, "We think we're a little over halfway with the life cycle of the console, but that's not to say there won't be an overlap (with the next generation)."
