can you make it so that when you type a number into a box it will be automatically entered as a negative number?

  1. Yes you can.

    Select the cells that you want this format to apply to.

    Then, with the cells selected, select the Format menu --> Cells --> Numbers Tab --> Custom

    In the space after "Type:" enter "-#" without the quotes.  That is the negative sign and then the pound sign.  There should be no spaces between the negative sign and the pound sign.

    Click Ok.

    When you enter a number into the cells that have this format, they will appear negative.
