Smart Glass and Windows 8 - E3 is supposed to be about video games first and tech demos second, something that Microsoft failed to understand as they delivered below everyone’s expectations.
E3, or the Electronic Entertainment Expo, is the one event in the gaming calendar where video game publishers and developers come together to reveal their line-up in terms of technology and video games to the world.
The highlight of E3 is more often than not the consoles and the video game. Microsoft however, decided to focus less on the console and more on the interactivity between the Xbox 360, Windows powered Smartphones and tablets would have.
Halo 4
The Press Conference started off on a strong footing with a brilliantly done live-action trailer for Halo 4 followed by a visually impressive, yet more-of-the-same gameplay demo of the game as well. By no means was it not exciting for fans of the series, but there wasn’t much in the way of innovation when it came to shaking up the franchise that Bungie had developed so well over the years.
Gears of War Judgment
The next game from the studio that recently brought everyone the superb Gears of War 3 is back with their latest instalment in the series. The teaser trailer indicated that the game was more of a spin-off as compared to a full-blown sequel, however, even then it was enough to get everyone interested.
That however, is where the Microsoft Press Conference was worth watching. Yes, there was the amazing Tomb Raider demo followed by the equally mind-blowing Resident Evil 6 gameplay walkthrough, however neither of those games are Xbox exclusives and from Microsoft’s standpoint it could have done a lot better.
Xbox Smart Glass was a cool bit of tech as it showed off how all Windows 8 powered gadgets could interact with the Xbox 360 but it seemed that the entire show was focused around it and that led to a large number of gamers ending up disappointed.
