Everyday I have a file that says microsoft update and it is on the c drive. If I go to Add/remove files it is a large list of them for the past 2 years. If I try to delete them it says applications use them. Do I really need these or is it safe to delete them?

  1. Most of the times, it is safe to delete the shared files, because many uninstallers leave their traces in the Windows Registry, which appear as warnings while you install it.

However, to be sure, download "Revo Uninstaller" ( Sorry , you would have to google it to know the site :-(  ) and uninstall apps using that application. It will automatically take care of other things...

    Hope this helps..

  2. DO NOT DELETE THEM.

It's true. For some God-knows-what reason Microsoft has always linked applications to other software.

If you don't want to see them on your desktop, you could create a folder on the desktop called 'unused items,' then click & drag stuff you don't use to the new folder.

Yes it stinks to not be able to clean up your system as you wish, but in a Microsoft world you have to be creative to hide unwanted stuff.
