Microsoft vs. Cisco.?

Is Cisco better than Microsoft??? The reason why I am asking coz I am a Junior Network Admin and I have to do take care of all backups and keep an eye on servers, make sure all drives are ok with enuff space. I am always cleaning stuff around like File servers (moving files around coz of stupid users) ... I mean I can prevent this from happening and I can block users so they wont get access and all that. Some type users loose files and I have to get them back by ordering the tapes back + I do desktop support. Basically, cleaning users and servers ****. In cisco ... I mean in networking ... working with the routers and switchs, is it the same thing ??? But then I also heard that there are only consulting jobs in networking field as far as I know of because once U set up the network then there wont be any issue. Well, once in a while something can happen where support consultants fix it remotely but most likely nothing to do in networking field. Please Help. Thanks in advanced.

  1. You should do both.  I do, and you don't get bored doing the same task everyday.

  2. I'm not sure if I completely understand your questions, but it seems like you're asking if network support is a better job than helpdesk support or user app support.

They are two different animals and usually one can't run without the other.  The make-believe world answer is to know them both.  If I had to choose, I would stick with network support for the same reasons you mentioned above.  User-end customers are a pain in the neck!  ;)  Network administration is simple and "elite" in a way; not as many people are drawn to it because you can't put a bunch of MCSE-type letters behind your name in your email signature.  Cisco router and switch configuration (3com included) is complicated when you're first learning but pretty straight forward once you get the gist of it (it's very similar to programming PBX's).  And yes, when you set it up right, it rarely breaks on you beyond a state of quick repair or quick reload.  The configuration interface is usually through HyperTerminal (or similar program) so it doesn't have the romantic feel that lots of new ITs like.  It appeals to the "old school" type to be cliche.  In short though, it's a great specialty and pays just as well as the MCSE stuff, if not better!

If you really want my opinion, get into Telephony networking with some of the big names like Nortel and eOn.  Great job, in high demand, and definitely niche!  It doesn't sound hip when you tell people that you're a telephone tech but that's only because no one realizes how much goes into making telephone networks run.  They're just as complex as computer networks.

    Hope this adds some insight.

    Take care,

    Chad.
