Microsoft word 2000 Troubles?

I've DLed the course outline for my geography class but it has strange symbols and boxes for where the info about the course should be. How do I fix my Microsoft Word to read it properly?

The file you want to download is actually a Word 2007 .docx file, even though the file is named .doc.  If you install the converter pack from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai... into your Word/Office 2000, then you will be able to open .docx files.
