I have a GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven Model JVM2070. This evening i tried roasting garlic in a plastic bowl. After leaving the microwave unattended, i smelt smoke, and came in and the microwave was filled with smoke and the plastic bowl had melted and the garlic was smoldering. The over had the top vent stuck open and the screen had nothing on it. I tried the breaker and unplugging it but the microwave won't turn back on. . I was wondering if based on what i had just told you, if the microwave is shot and if i need another one

  1. I recently had a similar problem. I would suggest just letting it set for a while. Clean it up the best you can, maybe use some vinegar, baking soda, and water..nothing to harsh. After a few days, try heating a cup of water.

I had to try mine a few times., It would work for a few days, then make a noise..so i'd turn it off and let it sit again; although I had a PLAN B..

(lol) which was to take it to MARBEC's where they repair small appliances and usually it's not that expensive (my microwave was an expensive one and its only a year or so old).

If yours is a cheapy/ old, then dump it. Its not worth the aggrevation.

If you continue to have problems/or for some reason it just don't want to work properly, and you have the extra $Cash$ then invest in a new one.

  2. It sounds like you need a new microwave.

  3. I may offer you information. There is a thermal cutout in your microwave that may have blown out due to the heat in your microwave. The thermal cutout is a safety device, sometimes they are the resettable kind, and sometimes they blow out and they are done for good. I would call around and see how much the local appliance companies charge for a service call, If they charge more than what a new microwave of comparable size and power would cost, then just dump it and buy the new microwave

  4. They take much abuse and are very durable.Clean it up and let it cool down and I bet it'll live yet another day.Good luck

  5. um yes I think I'd get a new one. even if it turns on again it may not be safe, the wires may be a bit fried.

EDIT: just roast your garlic in the regular oven next time and make sure whatever bowls you put in the microwave are more sturdy

to roast garlic, heat oven to about 400, placean UNpeeled head of garlic on a sheet of foil, gather the foil up around the garlic, but don't close it yet. Drizzle generously with olive oil.

Close the foil, place on baking sheet in oven roast for 30 minutes. remove from oven, carefully open foil, and allow to cool, once cooled the cloves can be squeezed from their skins
