Mid Atlantic trounce Pennsylvania in National Women Championship: Women Hockey Recap
Tara Puffenberger scored a couple of goals and had an assist to carry Mid Atlantic to a 6-2 victory in the third place of the play-off game held at the American University in Washington DC, on May 26.
The National Women Championship concluded with New Jersey coming out victorious against South in the overtime while Mid Atlantic managed the third place. Meanwhile, New England trounced California in the final game to continue their winning-streak.
In the one-week long tournament, more than one hundred women athletes took part to get a place in the national squad.
In the third place of the play-offs, Mid Atlantic displayed impressive performances and scored six goals against the two of their competitors. From the very first minute of the match, Pennsylvania team established their dominance with the ball possession.
Their efforts bore fruits in the 13th minute of the match, when Nicole Nelson managed to get the ball at the top of the circle and unleashed a powerful shot at the goal.
However, the lead changed hands in the 20th minute of the match. Katie O’Donnell of Mid Atlantic made a long run, while dodging two defending girls and unleashed a powerful-shot at the goal. With the Katie’s goal, the results became equal at 1-1.
The equal scoring forced the two teams to speed up their game. The players from Pennsylvania started back to back attacks, but failed to score a go-ahead goal. They obtained a number of short corners, which were denied from the other side.  
In the 31st minute of the game, the efforts of Pennsylvania bore fruit and Heather Susek struck a left-slanting shot at the goal, putting her team ahead on the scoreboard. However, the joys were short lived, as Mid Atlantic tied the knots before
going into the second half of play. Tara Puffenberger converted a short corner in the 33rd minute of the game and levelled the scores at 2-2. At the halftime, the two sides were locking horns at 2-2.
The second half action was completely belonged to Mid Atlantic, which obtained a couple of goals while holding Pennsylvania score-less throughout the period. From the very early minutes, Mid Atlantic started most offensive style of play at the start of the
second half and carried out plenty of strikes.
Amy Swensen, the custodian of the Pennsylvania team though made some crucial saves, but failed to bring her team back into the game. Mid Atlantic earned a short corner in the 42nd minute of the game and tested this time Dina Rizzo, who didn’t
miss the chance.
In a matter of three minutes, Puffenberger nailed another goal to take an insurmountable lead in the game. After and end-to-end play, Mid Atlantic won the game by four goals, 6-2. With the triumph, they also secured the third place in the National Women
Championship.
