Question:

Mid afternoon snow conditions question?

I took up snowboarding this season and made most of my trips late winter up until now. I was wondering how mid afternoon snow conditions compare to mid afternoon conditions during winter.

Here in southern CA, if a trail gets heavy use in march, it's like going off roading with my board popping up and down everywhere. It's kinda fun but I like smooth cruisin...

I was wondering if the bumpiness is strictly a spring slush thing or is it always like that late in the day no matter what season/where you go?

  1. It really just depends on the weather.  It will get slushy if it gets warm, no matter what time of year. But in the winter, it is less likely to get slushy, because it usually stays cold all day long.

Chunky snow is hard to ride on unless you are a more advanced rider.  It is just practice.  You want to have your knees bent and loose to absorb the impact so you aren't bouncing around everywhere.  Most people stiffen up when they get into chunky stuff, which just gets them tossed around.

  2. It really depends on the conditions, the resort, and the traffic.  If you get a dump of fresh snow after the hill has been groomed, then later in the day that fresh snow will be all worked up into natural moguls.  It can be a lot of fun!  IT happens in the spring because the snow is so soft - in mid-winter the "machine groomed granular" is very hard and does not work into moguls as quickly.
