Misty for Me out of the Nassau Stakes over ground concerns, leaves Midday the favourite to win it at Glorious Goodwood
A breaking news from Glorious Goodwood on 28 July for the Group 1 Nassau Stakes was that the Sir Henry Cecil trained Midday who won the 2009 and 2010 edition of the Nassau Stakes, will not be the favourite to win it this time around.
The 30th July Glorious Goodwood meet was considering Aidan O’Brien trained Misty for Me upstart as the favoured one to win the stakes race.
The Glorious Goodwood ground confirmed on 29 July that it has ruled out the inclusion of the 2 to 1 favourite of the race, Misty for Me.
The race was turning out to be a mouthwatering clash between the last year’s winner Midday and the globetrotter, Snow Fairy, but with Misty for Me gone the betting trend for the 30 July Group 1 Nassau Stakes will lean back towards the reigning champion.
The care taker clerk of the Glorious Goodwood race course, Seamus Buckley revealed that the going could still be good to firm, which prompted the Irish 1,000 Guineas' winner, Misty for Me, out of the race.
With the favourite gone, six other fillies and mares remain for the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, with the likes of Sir Michael Stoute trained Crystal Capella, Snow Fairy and Midday so it could still be an intriguing race.
Misty for Me has a dismal record in England, where previously she only managed a stale 11th position in the Irish equivalent, English Group 1, 1,000 Guineas for fillies and mares and, also a non threatening fifth in the English Oaks in the spring season.
On the other hand, the daughter of Oasis Dream out of Midsummer by Kingmambo, Midday, repeatedly won the Nassau Stakes for the past two years.
Back in 2010 she went on to participate in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille in France after the Nassau Stakes' win.
She comprehensively won the French meet and, then headed for a second place finish in the Breeders’ Cup filly and mare turf at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2010, under jockey, Tom Queally.
The year before, Midday blossomed in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare turf at Santa Anita turf course.
In the 2011 season, Midday has had three starts, with three finishes on the card.
The 5-year-old bay mare won the Group 2 Middleton Stakes at York on 12 May, 2011, against seven other fillies and mares.
Her last start was at the Curragh in Ireland, where she went up against Misty for Me in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes, but got beaten by Misty for Me by a massive six lengths.
Maybe the devastation Misty for Me caused in the Pretty Polly Stakes, called punters to consider Misty for Me over Midday, despite Midday’s awesome track record, but now Midday is left with the not so threatening field which will raise her chances to win the third Nassau Stakes in a row.
