I teach 6th grade and could really use some suggestions for novels I can read with my students. I am looking for novels to go along with the Middle Ages and WWII. The Diary of Anne Frank is off limits... they read that in 8th grade~!

Thanks!

  1. i dont know if this is the book you want but our teacher read us bud not buddy in fifth grade

  2. I don't know of any 6th grade novels dealing with those subjects. From my experience, children are not ready to handle such material at that age.

  3. I am quite appalled at the person who mentioned that students should not be taught about these things until they are older! I talked about WWI & WWII with fifth graders, surely 6th graders can handle it. As long as you approach the subject sensitively, you should have no problems. I always explained to my students that history is not always pretty, but we study it so we don't make the same mistakes that were made in the past. As students move through school, they build upon the historical knowledge they gathered.

    WWII:

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix (it's not about WWII, but it discusses totalitarian regime )

    Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy

Night by Elie Wiesel (Not sure if 6th graders can handle it)

Number the Stars by Lois Lowery

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr

    Hiroshima by John Hersey

Middle Ages: I found a really nice list here

I hope this helped! Good luck!
