Middle Name Change Through Marriage

I am married and I would like to ask if I can use my Last Name as my Middle Name and use my husbands last name as my Last Name? Do I need to go to court to do that? I believe I don't have to go to court to change my middle name through marriage. What's the US/MD law on this?

Juliana

  1. In most states, you get a free chance to do this when you get married. If you didn't do it then, and you want to legally change your name, you'll have to go through the appropriate procedures. Contact your county clerk's office and ask what the appropriate procedure is in MD and how much it will cost you.

  2. It is very common for woman to use their last or maiden name as a middle name.  So if you married John Smith, but your maiden name is Jones, your new name is Juliana Jones Smith.  This does not require a legal name change.

But if you want this name on your passport, social security card, credit cards, etc., you will be required to change your name through the court process.
