  1. Middle hitter, middle blocker, people use these titles interchangibly.

As for what hits to practice-

Front quick commonly known as a 1

Back quick commonly known as a C

Front shoot to the middle B or 31

    And practice the slide

It's hard to give you the names for the sets because everyone uses different names, but I think these are fairly universal.

  2. first off middle's are not hitter's they are called Middle BLOCKERS!!! they need to block first and second hold at least one or two blockers. The best hits to work on for the middle are 1's or j**s (you jump and the setter sets to you) two's are ok the setter sets and then you hit. back ones (behind the setter). shoot sets or a 21. and step outs or C's (the etter back sets a lob set to where you would hit a five. hope that helps

  3. It really depends on what your team is running for setters.  If you run a 5-1 I would say that you should work on your slide.

At any level you want a variety of hits from the middle so that you keep the opponents guessing as to what you might be hitting.  You want to run everything as if you're hitting a 1 ball just to get that split second edge on the blockers (ie take your first step as if you were hitting a one)...then take your approach out for the slide or the shoot.

Combination plays are also good (1-2 stack, 31-2 combo, X..)..wether you hit the ball or not....drawing blockers off other hitters is another important job of the middle.

For you personally to work on i would say, like others said above, work on your slide and 31 (inside shoot) to give you options for moving yourself around the net.  Also make sure your 1 (and 2 for broken plays) are solid.  The rest will come as you start to get better and start to play at a higher level.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Uh, middles block and hit... so that "coach" is wrong...  Good advice otherwise... You said "below average" team, so probably focus on a "2" ball (high middle set, but good blockers can easily get there)

a "1" (a set about a foot above the net for you... you need to start your approach before the setter actually sets the ball

third, i would say run a "slide" (back set that you run and do a one foot approach onand hit)

Start with these, then maybe try back "1"/"C" and 21, 31, etc.
