Middlesbrough boss urges fans to be patient with Kris Boyd

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has urged the club’s fans to give striker Kris Boyd time to flourish.

Boyd — who became the Scottish Premier League’s all-time leading scorer during his spell with Rangers — moved to Boro from the Scottish giants over the summer, but has not quite been able to replicate his consistent goalscoring record in the Football League
Championship.

The Scotland international scored his fifth goal of the campaign in the 2-0 win at Scunthorpe United on Tuesday, 9 November, but has been the subject of criticism by the club’s fans for his relatively slow start to life in the North East.

The 27-year old has made 16 appearances for his new club this term.

Mowbray, who knows all too well about the threat posed by Boyd having been manager of Rangers’ fierce rivals Celtic, defended the player, claiming that the forward will score an average of one goal every two games.
'Boyd's intelligence will help him get goals'

He told the BBC that: "People concentrate on negatives, but with enough games his tally is about one in two. He has the intelligence of knowing where to stand and where to be. Let's hope there's more waiting in the bag."

Meanwhile, Mowbray has revealed that he is pleased with the upturn in fortunes since he took over as manager from the departed Gordon Strachan in October.

When Strachan left, Boro were mired in the relegation zone. While Mowbray lost his first match in charge to Bristol City at home, Boro have won their last two games against Crystal Palace and Scunthorpe to lift them to 19th place in the table — three points
clear of the relegation zone, but seven away from a coveted play-off place.

Mowbray said that: "We need to believe that we can push on and hopefully the back-to-back wins there can do that. That said, we've got a very difficult task on Sunday going to Swansea, but obviously we're delighted with the two wins. To get the first (away)
win was crucial."
