Middlesbrough re-signs Stephen Pears as goalkeeping coach
Middlesbrough has re-signed Stephen Pears as the club's goalkeeping coach until at least the end of this season.
Pears previously held the role at the club back in 2007 and current Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray moved quickly to secure his return to the football club.
"I'm delighted to have Stephen back. He has produced some very decent goalkeepers here, one of whom is now at Chelsea [Ross Turnbull] and the other at Liverpool [Brad Jones], and we've now got a young
boy in the first team whose not doing too badly either," said Mowbray on the Middlesbrough website.
This is a very positive signing for the club and Pears' previous history with Middlesbrough ensures he will not need a settling in period. He can benefit the games of Jason Steele, Connor Ripley and Danny
Coyne in a number of ways.
A positive move
This news suggests that Mowbray has actively sought out Pears in order to bring him to the football club. This means there is complete respect and admiration from the current staff at the club for Pears'
quality and potential as a coach.
Pears can walk straight back into the role because very little should have changed since he was last in the club. He can hit the ground running and have a positive effect on Middlesbrough's goalkeepers
straight away.
Pears is a coach that places a strong emphasis on physical fitness. This means the three 'keepers in the first team squad should get fitter and as a result be effective for longer.
"The proof of the pudding in Stephen's ability is the goalkeepers he has produced. I'm sure he'll be a big help for Jason Steele and for young Connor Ripley, who was on the bench on Saturday and has been
very impressive in training," added Mowbray.
Betting advice
The standard of goalkeeping at Middlesbrough will increase with Pears' return. This means the side should concede fewer goals and will be a better bet to win close matches on paper. Back the side to have
a low goals conceded tally over the next few weeks.
