Middlesex reach 277 against Essex: County Championship Division Two – England domestic
Middlesex scored a decent first innings total of 277 in a match of the County Championship Division Two against Essex at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.
None of the Middlesex batsmen managed to score a half-century and nine of them were dismissed after getting decent starts.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Foster-c1644 elected to field first after winning the toss. He expected some moisture beneath the wicket, but the Lord’s pitch has traditionally favoured the batsmen and it lived up to its reputation.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Rogers-c1249 got off to a very good start, scoring 65 runs for the first wicket. They batted sensibly and did not take too many risks with the new ball. However, both batsmen gave their wickets away after scoring 38 and
25 runs respectively.
The innings was then stabilised by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dawid-Malan-c1344, who put together 43 runs for the third wicket. However, things changed dramatically for the home team, as they lost three wickets on 115.
Malan was the first one to be dismissed after scoring 29 runs and was followed by his captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Neil-Dexter-c2091, who failed to trouble the scorers. The Middlesex first-drop Housego was sent back to the pavilion in the very next over for 20.
Wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gareth-Berg-c1457 rescued the team from trouble with a solid 66-run stand for the 6th wicket. They failed to carry onto the start and both were dismissed in one over. The wicketkeeper batsman
was the first one to be dismissed after scoring 32 runs whereas Berg followed him after adding 34 runs to the total.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ollie-Rayner-c2139 and Steven Finn batted brilliantly down the order. They put together 60 runs for the 9th wicket before Finn got out. The tall seamer scored 32 runs
off 44 balls with the help of 5 fours.
The last wicket to fall in the Middlesex innings was of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Corey-Collymore-c1283, who lasted only three balls for his duck. Rayner remained unbeaten on 32.
Reece Topley was exceptional with the ball, as he claimed a five-for. He gave away few runs, but it did not matter as he took wickets with his immaculate line and length.
Essex did come out to bat for a couple of overs, but their openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Billy-Godleman-c1164 and Alastair Cook survived the spell. They were unable to put any runs on the board, but the aim was to avoid losing any wicket, which they successfully managed.
